Ease after Hardship

Ease after Hardship

It might be said:

Ease after Hardship

The Ruler of Muslims, ^Uthman ibn ^Afan (may Allah raise his rank) sent Sa^id ibnul ^As to al Kufa, in Baghdad to rule it with justice and wisdom. Sa^id was indeed a very good ruler. He helped the poor and weak. He helped the people that did not have shelter to find a place to protect them from the cold and heat. Everyone liked and obeyed him.

This good ruler had a habit of serving food to the people every night, providing a variety of delicious foods.

The poor people would come and have their dinner then go to their homes carrying with them enough for the next day. Among the people who used to come eat dinner at the ruler’s quarter was a poor man and his family, who did not have much at all from this world.

One night, when this man returned from dinner he found his wife crying over their situation. She said to her husband, “I beg you please talk to the ruler.

I heard that he is generous and helps those in need. Tell him about our situation, maybe he will give us something. Our children are young and they can not be patient with this hard time like us.”

The man was moved by his wife’s plea but he was afraid that he would be turned down by the ruler in front of all the people. His wife continued to encourage him and told him to recite the honorable Fatiha with the intention that Allah make things easy for him. The next night, the man went to the ruler’s quarters as was his habit. After the people ate dinner and left, he stayed in his spot.

The ruler noticed this and called the man over. The ruler asked him, “What is your need?” The man was quiet and did not answer. The ruler ordered his servants to exit, then the ruler said, “It is only you and I now. So mention your need.” The man muttered and sat there rubbing his hands and looked to the left and right and all around. The ruler then turned the lights off.

The ruler said, “May Allah have mercy on you. You can’t even see my face anymore, tell me what your need is.” The man said, “I have a need but I am very hesitant about complaining to you.” The ruler said, “Come tomorrow and tell my trustee your need.” The next day when the man saw the ruler’s trustee, the trustee said, “The ruler has ordered something to be given to you, so bring someone to carry it with you.” The man said, “I can’t afford to hire someone to carry with me.”

Then the man went to his wife and started blaming her because he thought the ruler was going to give him a basket of dates or a small bag of flour. And he felt all the color drain from his face because he was so embarrassed.

A few days passed and the woman said to her husband, “Dear husband, you see the situation we are in and how bad it has gotten. Whatever the ruler wants to give you, take it.” So the man went to the trustee and the trustee said, “Where have you been? When the ruler found out that you don’t have anyone to help you carry, he ordered me to appoint people to carry the gift for you.” Three servants came out, each one was carrying a bag with 10,000 dirhams inside.

They went to his house and when they reached he opened one of the bags to give them some money and they said, “Where should we go? We are your servants as the ruler has ordered.” The man and his wife were very happy for this ease and good situation that came to them after serve hardship and difficulties.
