The Lark and the Elephant

The Lark and the Elephant

It might be said:

The Lark and the Elephant

Once upon a time a lark (kind of bird) lived happily and peacefully at the edge of the forest. When she lay eggs she was so excited and made a nest for them on the side of the road because she wanted the animals passing by to keep her company. She chose soft plants to put around her nest and sat on top of her eggs waiting for them to crack and for her young birds to come out.

One day she got so thirsty that she left her nest and went to a nearby pond to drink. When she came back she screamed in horror at what she saw.

A huge elephant had passed by and stepped on the edge of her nest and overturned it. Her eggs lay all over the ground and were about to break.

The mother lark wanted to cry but instead she gathered up the eggs that she could find and put them back in the nest. Then she flew to the elephant and said to him, “Why did you hurt my eggs and damage my nest?” The elephant arrogantly replied, “You weak pathetic bird, how dare you yell in my face! Don’t you know that I am the biggest and strongest animal in the forest?! Pretty soon I will destroy all the small birds like you because I am so strong…ha ha ha.” Then the elephant moved his big trunk trying to hit the lark, but at the last minute she flew away and saved herself.

The lark was so angry and wanted to teach the mean elephant a lesson that would make him stop bullying the weaker and smaller animals. She went to her friends, the crows, and said, “I have a plan that will teach the elephant a lesson. The first step is that you fly to him and peck the skin on top of his eyes, that way the blood will go down to his eyes and he will not be able to see. After that we will go on to the second step of the plan.”

The crows agreed to help her, and they went with her to the elephant. When they saw him they attacked him and pecked at the top of his eyes till the blood started coming out and he started yelling because he was in pain and couldn’t see anymore.

Quickly the lark went to the pond and asked the frogs who lived there if they would go to the big hole that someone had dug up in the forest and start croaking there. They did that and within minutes the elephant came along. He could not see anything so he thought that the hole was the pond of water where the frogs usually live.

He reached the edge of the hole and he fell in. The lark flew over him and called out, “Oh huge elephant what do you think of my plan that I carried out even though I am small.” Then the lark went back to her nest to take care of her eggs after she had taught the elephant a lesson he shall remember as long as he lives.
